As the growing interest on the new Netflix series “Monsters portraying The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” is based on the infamous case of two brothers who killed their parents in 1989. Initially, Lyle and Erik Menendez were portrayed as privileged sons eager for their inheritance.
But after these many years, public perception has shifted as more details about their upbringing, including allegations of sexual and emotional abuse by their father, have come to light.
The Crime:
As the report confirms, In August 1989, the brothers killed their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in their Beverly Hills home. In the beginning investigation they attempted to stage an alibi but were later arrested after confessing to their therapist.
Trials and Conviction:
Their first trial began in 1993, featured emotional testimony about years of abuse. After it a mistrial was declared. In their second trial in 1995, which resulted in life sentences without parole. Abuse evidence was largely excluded in the second trial.
Renewed Interest:
New evidences were introduced , including a letter from Erik detailing abuse, and claims from a former member of the boy band Menudo alleging sexual abuse by Jose Menendez, have reignited public interest. After this the case has gained a following on social media, with advocates pushing for the brothers’ release.
Now the Netflix series, created by Ryan Murphy, revisits these events and the evolving narrative surrounding the Menendez brothers.
