In a significant development, 104 Indian immigrants, including 33 from Gujarat, were deported from the United States and arrived in India on Wednesday, February 5, 2025. The group, which included women and children, landed in Amritsar aboard a US military aircraft. The Gujarati deportees were later flown to Ahmedabad on Thursday, where they were transported to their hometowns in government vehicles under police supervision.

The deportation process began when the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) authorities identified the individuals as illegal immigrants. The group was flown to Amritsar’s Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, where they underwent verification and immigration clearance. Among the 104 deportees, 33 were from Gujarat, including families with young children.

Upon arrival in Ahmedabad, the state government ensured their safe return home. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi directed senior officials to coordinate with relevant agencies and provide security for the deportees. A deputy superintendent of police (DySP) was stationed at Amritsar airport to oversee the process, while a nodal officer was present at Ahmedabad airport to facilitate their transportation.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the issue in the Rajya Sabha during the Parliament Budget Session, emphasizing that deportations are a routine process and not a new occurrence. He stated that since 2009, a total of 15,668 illegal Indian immigrants have been deported from the US.

Jaishankar also clarified the procedures followed during deportations, noting that ICE authorities adhere to a standard operating procedure established in 2012. According to the minister, women and children are not restrained during transit, and the needs of deportees, including food and medical emergencies, are attended to. However, some deportees claimed that their hands and legs were shackled throughout the flight, with restraints only removed after landing.
