UW-Whitewater Gymnast Kara Welsh Fatally Shot in Tragic Incident

ELKHORN, WI – Kara Welsh, a 21-year-old student-athlete at the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater and a decorated gymnast, was fatally shot on August 30 in a heartbreaking incident involving her boyfriend, Chad T. Richards. According to the criminal complaint, Welsh was shot eight times in an off-campus apartment. She succumbed to her injuries later that night.

Richards, 23, now faces a charge of first-degree intentional homicide. During his initial court appearance in Walworth County, bail was set at $1 million. Richards, a former wrestler for UW-Whitewater, remains in custody.

The Incident

Police responded to Richards’ apartment on West Whitewater Street after Richards himself called 911. Officers found Welsh lying in a pool of blood with multiple gunshot wounds. A black handgun and spent casings were scattered throughout the apartment.

Richards claimed the shooting occurred during a heated argument. He alleged that Welsh grabbed his handgun, prompting a struggle during which he fired the shots, some while she was in a fetal position. The medical examiner identified eight gunshot wounds, including injuries to Welsh’s neck and torso. Eleven shell casings were recovered at the scene.

Remembering Kara Welsh

Welsh, a Plainfield, Illinois native, was an accomplished gymnast and a two-time All-American. She made history by winning the individual national title on vault at the 2023 NCAA Division III championships, cementing her place as one of Whitewater’s most celebrated athletes. She was entering her senior year, pursuing a Bachelor’s in Business Administration (BBA) with a focus on Sports Management.

Her younger sister, Kaeli Welsh, described Kara as an inspiration and a role model, saying through tears, “She was the strongest person I know, both physically and mentally. She had so much more to give the world than gymnastics.”

Supporting the Family

A GoFundMe campaign has been created to support Welsh’s family with funeral expenses. The fundraiser surpassed its $40,000 goal, raising over $48,700 as of Friday afternoon. Donations can be made at GoFundMe.

It was a sad incident, This incident now only destroyed a small and happy family, just like your and mine, but it al raised many questions about the mental health of the upcoming generations.
