Sabrina Carpenter wowed at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, making headlines with a stunning nod to pop legend Madonna. Carpenter arrived on the red carpet wearing a gown that Madonna had originally donned at the 1991 Oscars.
The vintage white satin dress, designed by Bob Mackie, featured a deep-V neckline and was embellished with sequins, pearls, and crystals—oozing classic Hollywood glamour.
This very gown had been customized for Madonna when she attended the Academy Awards alongside Michael Jackson and later performed “Sooner or Later” from Dick Tracy.
The gown itself has quite the history. It was originally created for a Vanity Fair cover shoot with Madonna, styled by fashion stylist Maria Schiavo, before the singer requested her own version for the Oscars.
Madonna even wore the dress again in her controversial 1992 book, Sex, and it later appeared on Fran Drescher in a 1994 episode of The Nanny.
Bob Mackie, who is known for designing iconic looks for stars like Marilyn Monroe, Diana Ross, and Cher, expressed his delight over Carpenter’s tribute. Mackie shared the story behind the dress on Instagram, celebrating the enduring appeal of his designs.
Carpenter’s stylist, Jared Ellner, found the gown through LA’s Tab Vintage, a well-known studio specializing in rare fashion pieces. Ellner completed the look with De Beers diamonds, adding even more sparkle to the glamorous moment.
On a big night for Carpenter, who was nominated for seven awards, she performed a medley of her hits, wearing a dazzling Victoria’s Secret corseted bodysuit that took over 180 hours to make and featured more than 18,500 hand-applied crystal beads.
The performance also referenced Madonna’s 2003 VMA kiss with Britney Spears, as Carpenter shared a playful kiss with a dancer during her performance.
This Madonna-inspired red carpet moment highlights how today’s pop stars continue to honor the legacy of the Queen of Pop, ensuring her influence remains strong in both fashion and music.
